Appendix 3.1
ETHER Immersive Soundscape
The immersive soundscape of ETHER set a perceptible tone to the exhibition and provided a subtle narrative arc to the experience. Participants were first unsettled and disoriented by an initial action, the loud ringing of outer space and vociferous otherworldly noises inspired by waves emanating from the cosmos. This was followed by a planetary tour of the solar system including seismic activity on the surface of mercury, lightning on the surface of Jupiter, and dust storms on Mars. Other elements of the soundscape included short clips from the Voyager Golden Records distorted to sound like they were travelling through various mediums in the cosmos such as ice, rock, and heavy gasses. The final portion of the soundscape slowly began to take participants out of the experience and into a more terrestrial milieu with the sound of crickets, animals, a rainstorm, and a gusty breeze.
