This site is dedicated to exploring the emergent field of sensory design, which is to say: designing, building, making and experiencing atmospheres and objects via the senses – all of them. Two exhibitions, Sense of the City: An Alternate Approach to Urbanism (2006) and The Senses: Design Beyond Vision (2018), provide the starting point for these investigations. Sensory ethnography is our methodology of choice.
This site also presents the outcomes of two related research-creation projects – “Sensory Entanglements” (2015–2022) and “Sensing Differently” (2023-2026) and the companion webpages for two books – The Routledge International Handbook of Sensory Ethnography (2023) and Sense-Making (2025) both published by Taylor & Francis.
